Living and working in Trentino: useful resources

Practical information, useful data and first-hand insights for professionals considering a move to Trentino. Explore what working, living and building a future here can look like in practice.

Life in Trentino

Trento and Rovereto are Trentino’s two main urban centres, combining services, cultural activities and good transport links with easy access to mountains, lakes and outdoor activities. In 2025, the province of Trento ranked first in Italy in Il Sole 24 Ore’s Quality of Life survey. The two cities are connected by the Brenner railway, with regional and national train services, and both have urban public transport networks. MUSE in Trento and MART in Rovereto are two of the area’s main cultural institutions.

Yes, and not only in the main urban centres. Trento and Rovereto both offer coworking spaces equipped for remote work. In Rovereto, for example, Trentino Sviluppo manages coworking spaces at Progetto Manifattura and TSpace. There is also Coworking in Cooperazione, a project designed to make shared workspaces available in other parts of Trentino by repurposing existing local premises and equipping them with workstations, connectivity and tools for remote work. The network includes spaces in areas such as Valsugana, Val di Ledro and Val di Sole, helping make flexible working possible outside Trento and Rovereto as well.

Trentino’s school system includes state schools and state-recognised private schools, with a strong focus on language learning. In 2025, students in Trentino generally achieved INVALSI results above the national average, with particularly strong results in English. The proportion of students reaching the end of secondary school without adequate basic skills was also below the Italian average. English and German teaching is strengthened across the provincial school system through the Trentino Trilingue programme. For families looking for a strong international dimension, there are also specific options. For example, the Liceo Internazionale Arcivescovile in Rovereto offers advanced study of several languages and extensive use of CLIL, Content and Language Integrated Learning.

Trentino offers a network of early childhood services, schools, sports and cultural activities, as well as a range of provincial measures for families. In the 2023/2024 educational year, Trentino’s public early childhood system offered 3,948 nursery places, equivalent to 32.7% of resident children under the age of three. Istat also reports that the Autonomous Province of Trento has the highest level of municipal spending in Italy per child under three on early childhood education services. Alongside national measures, Trentino also has specific provincial schemes, including the Single Provincial Allowance and, from 2026, a new measure for families in which a third child is born or adopted. As with national measures, access is subject to specific eligibility requirements, which may include residence, household composition and financial circumstances.

Work-life balance also depends on the organisation and conditions offered by each employer. However, both national and provincial measures are available to help people combine work and family responsibilities. For employees, national legislation provides for parental leave during the first 14 years of a child’s life. The combined entitlement for both parents can total up to ten months, increasing to eleven if the father takes at least three months of leave. A single parent can take up to eleven months. Compensation rules vary depending on the periods of leave taken and the conditions set out in the legislation. Trentino also offers a supplementary provincial allowance for private-sector employees taking maternity or parental leave, subject to specific eligibility criteria and conditions. For current amounts, eligible periods and application procedures, it is best to refer to the official information page.

Work and careers

It is not a matter of one being better than the other. It depends on the kind of career and life you are looking for. Trentino is smaller in scale than a large metropolitan area, but it has a well-developed research and innovation ecosystem that includes the University of Trento, Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Fondazione Edmund Mach, Hub Innovazione Trentino and Trentino Sviluppo. Overall, the provincial system employs almost 5,000 people and connects research, business and technological development. In Rovereto, hubs such as Progetto Manifattura and Polo Meccatronica make this connection particularly visible. For highly skilled professionals looking for career opportunities without giving up easy access to nature, services and a different pace of life from a large city, Trentino can be a practical alternative worth considering.

Yes. In Trentino, you can access a public employment services system coordinated by the Employment Agency of the Province of Trento through its Employment Centres and network of accredited providers. Services include career guidance, support in finding opportunities, help with applications and information on internships, training and recruitment initiatives. The services available depend on your circumstances and needs. Access to specific programmes or measures may be subject to eligibility requirements.

Yes. Trentino offers a range of training and skills development opportunities for people with different professional situations and needs. The Employment Agency’s Formazione X Te portal brings together vocational courses, training pathways under the GOL programme, adult education and courses offered by accredited providers. Trentino Sviluppo also promotes initiatives focused on innovation and entrepreneurship, such as Trentino Innovation Academy. Eligibility requirements, target groups and costs vary depending on the individual programme.
