Technologist in the field of Engineering in the Hydrogen Sector

Ingegneri

The HYdrogen Technologies and Resilient Energy Systems unit (HyRES) of FBK's Centre for Sustainable Energy is looking for a Technologist to join its Engineering area, with a focus on Balance of Plant (BOP) and components for the hydrogen sector, covering design, procurement and commissioning of demonstrators, prototypes and internal test benches.

What to expect

The HyRES unit works on hydrogen production, storage and end uses, in collaboration with industrial partners and through several European, national and industry-funded projects. The position involves hands-on engineering work on hydrogen systems, in a multidisciplinary team environment. The contract is fixed-term for 24 months starting in October 2026, full-time (38 hours per week), with possibility of extension depending on funding. The gross annual salary ranges from 41,245 to 47,182 euros depending on background and expertise, plus an objectives achievement bonus. Benefits include flexi-time, company subsidised cafeteria or meal vouchers, internal car park, supplementary pension and health fund, free training courses, public transport and sport discounts, psychological support service and welcome office support for visa and accommodation.

Position

The selected candidate will act as supervisor within the engineering competence area, supporting the Head of Unit in defining specifications for equipment, instrumentation and facilities. The role covers the definition of the infrastructure scheme for the centre's novel facility, engineering activities on PFDs and P&IDs for hydrogen systems — including electrolysers, fuel cells and compressors — and process modelling for the sizing and design of hydrogen plants. The position also involves supporting equipment supply across hydrogen projects, contributing to process safety activities such as HAZOP and HAZID studies and consequence analysis, following prototype and demo development through commissioning and Factory Acceptance Testing, and producing technical files, reports and scientific publications.

Requirements

It is required:

  • MSc in Engineering (process, energy, chemical, mechanical or similar);
  • know-how in equipment sizing with particular focus on oil & gas equipment and plants, to be applied to the hydrogen sector;
  • know-how in modelling tools for process engineering such as ASPEN, Gproms or similar;
  • familiarity with European Regulations, Codes and Standards for the hydrogen sector, including Pressure Equipment Directive, Machinery Directive and ATEX Directive;
  • proven experience in writing technical reports;
  • good knowledge of written and spoken English.

Preferred requirements

The following will be considered a plus:

  • PhD or at least three years of experience in a field relevant to this position.
  • Proven experience in the hydrogen sector, including hydrogen production technologies (electrolysis, methane cracking, and steam methane reforming (SMR)), hydrogen handling (transport, distribution, and storage), and hydrogen end uses (burners, boilers, and fuel cells); or experience in sizing oil and gas equipment, with a focus on gas handling processes such as purification and compression.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted in accordance with the procedures specified in the official call published on the FBK website or at the following linkExternal link, by August 31st, 2026.
