Tenure Track Researcher in Custom Radiation Sensors - Centre for Sensors and Devices

Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) is a private research institution based in Trento with twelve research centres. The Custom Radiation Sensors (CRS) unit of the Centre for Sensors and Devices (FBK-SD) is seeking a Researcher in the field of silicon radiation sensors, to drive the development of next-generation radiation detection technologies for applications in scientific experiments, medical and industrial contexts, material analysis, high energy physics and space missions.

What to expect

You will be part of the CRS unit, a group working on advanced radiation and image sensors built with fully customised fabrication technologies, in close collaboration with device and process scientists and engineers. The position is part of FBK's Tenure Track programme, a structured career path leading to a permanent Third Level Researcher (R3) contract, subject to a positive final assessment. The duration of the contract will be set by the Committee based on scientific objectives and assigned KPIs. The start date is January 2027, full-time (38 hours per week), with a gross annual salary of 47,182.01 euros. Position

The selected candidate will lead the research and development of novel technological solutions for radiation sensors, customising and refining technologies to meet specific application requirements. Activities span TCAD simulation of new device structures, layout design including test structures and innovative configurations, and advanced characterisation of sensing performance across a range of applications — from large-scale scientific experiments and photon science to medical imaging and space payloads. The role also includes the study of device figures of merit, management of scientific and industrial collaborations, development of new sensor applications, preparation of project proposals, and active contribution to dissemination and networking activities.

Requirements

Applicants should have the following qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Engineering or related fields;
  • proven experience in the development, design, testing and investigation of silicon radiation sensors and their application in scientific experiments;
  • experience with TCAD simulation tools for semiconductor devices and layout design tools;
  • experience in the development and characterisation of particle sensors such as LGADs, inverted LGADs, strip sensors and 3D sensors;
  • experience in the development of sensors for satellite-based experiments;
  • experience in the development and characterisation of sensors for x-ray photon science, including beam tests at large x-ray facilities;
  • experience in software programming for data analysis (ROOT, MATLAB, Python);
  • experience in the coordination and management of projects with industrial and/or academic partners;
  • oral and written proficiency in English;
  • good working knowledge of Italian.
