Tenure Track Researcher in Quantum Optics and Material Engineering - Centre for Sensors and Devices

Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) is a private research institution with twelve research centres, and its Centre for Sensors and Devices (FBK-SD) is seeking a Researcher to join its team within the IPCEI ME/CT project, focusing on quantum technologies, particularly quantum optics and materials engineering.

What to expect

You will develop and lead research activities in quantum optics and material engineering, creating synergies between existing research lines within FBK-SD and with other FBK centres, in particular ECT. The position follows FBK's Tenure Track programme: a structured career path designed to lead to a permanent Second Level Researcher (R2) contract, subject to a positive final assessment. The duration of the Tenure Track contract will be determined by the Committee based on scientific objectives and assigned KPIs. The gross annual salary is 60,138.75 euros, corresponding to a Second Level Researcher. The start date is November 2026, full-time (38 hours per week). Position

The selected candidate will develop and lead research activities in quantum technologies, with a focus on topological quantum optics and material engineering, contributing to FBK's role in the European quantum research and industrial ecosystem. The role involves exploring new materials with novel topological characteristics for quantum optics and information applications, contributing to research activities complementary to the superconducting quantum devices, diamond quantum pilot lines and photonic integrated circuits pilot line projects, identifying strategic project concepts with high success potential for quantum research, and collaborating in communication and dissemination activities to strengthen the SD Centre's presence.

Requirements

The ideal candidate should have:

  • PhD in Physics or Engineering
  • at least 8 years of experience including the PhD period
  • track record of high impact in the quantum science and technology area
  • strong research background in quantum optics with focus on 2D materials
  • background in material engineering, in particular nanoengineering of 2D materials
  • expertise in spectroscopic characterisation techniques
  • knowledge of nanofabrication techniques
  • excellent knowledge of EU research programmes and the European research sector
  • experience in working on research projects
  • English at level B2 or above (CEFR), verified during the interview

Preferred requirements

It will be considered a plus:

  • knowledge of written and spoken Italian
