Researcher – Life Cycle Sustainability and Techno-Economic Assessment of Hydrogen Technologies

Fondazione Bruno Kessler is looking for a researcher to join the HYdrogen Technologies and Resilient Energy Systems (HyRES) unit of the Centre for Sustainable Energy. The role focuses on modelling and engineering activities, with particular emphasis on the sustainability and techno-economic assessment of hydrogen technologies and hydrogen-based energy systems. 

What to expect

You will join the HyRES unit, which is involved in several European, national and industry-funded projects on hydrogen technologies, including fuel cells, electrolysers, energy system modelling, techno-economic assessment and sustainability analysis. The contract is fixed-term for 24 months, with possibility of extension depending on funding, starting in October 2026, full-time (38 hours per week). The gross annual salary ranges from 41,245 to 47,182 euros depending on background and expertise, plus an objectives achievement bonus. Position

The selected candidate will conduct techno-economic analyses and feasibility studies of hydrogen technologies, integrated energy systems and industrial applications, developing and applying economic models that consider investment and operating costs, technology performance, energy prices and market conditions. The role includes cost, scenario, sensitivity and uncertainty analyses to assess the economic viability of different technological configurations, as well as Life Cycle Assessment, Life Cycle Costing and Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment of hydrogen technologies and systems. Further activities include supporting the development of a techno-economic and LCSA parameter database, contributing to hydrogen certification and Guarantees of Origin, applying ecodesign methodologies to hydrogen technologies, and producing technical reports, project deliverables and scientific publications.

Requirements

It is required:

  • MSc in Energy, Chemical, Mechanical or Environmental Engineering or similar;
  • proven experience in techno-economic assessment and feasibility analysis of energy technologies, preferably in the hydrogen sector;
  • experience in developing cost and economic models, including scenario, sensitivity and uncertainty analyses;
  • know-how in code development for techno-economic analysis applied to hydrogen systems and components;
  • knowledge and experience in Life Cycle Assessment, Life Cycle Costing and Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment methodologies;
  • experience in collecting, managing and validating technical, economic and environmental data;
  • good knowledge of written and spoken English.

Preferred requirements

The following will be considered a plus:

  • PhD in a field related to the call;
  • familiarity with Python or other programming languages for data analysis and modelling;
  • experience with hydrogen technologies, energy system modelling or optimisation;
  • know-how in code development for LCA/LCSA applied to hydrogen systems and components;
  • experience in European or national research projects and scientific publishing.
