Software Developer - Formal Methods for System and Software

Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) is looking for a Software Developer to join the Formal Methods for System and Software Research Unit (FM Unit) of the Digital Industry Center, contributing to the development of advanced software solutions for the railway sector.

What to expect

You will join the FM Unit, a multidisciplinary team of around 35 researchers and developers working on formal methods and model-based design for complex embedded systems. The role is part of a research and development project in the railway domain, in collaboration with industrial partners including Rete Ferroviaria Italiana. The contract is fixed-term, starting in September 2026, with an initial duration of 6 months and the possibility of extension. The position is full time (38 hours per week), with part-time options depending on the candidate’s profile. The indicative gross annual salary is approximately €31,654, plus an objectives achievement bonus. Position

The selected candidate will contribute to the model-based design research line through the development and maintenance of software tools and systems for the railway domain. The role includes software design and implementation of new functionalities within existing tools, development of software systems running onboard or trackside, and preparation of technical documentation supporting project activities.

Requirements

The ideal candidate has:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology Engineering or equivalent professional experience;
  • good programming skills in Java, Python, C++, C or Rust;
  • hands-on experience with Git and software development and debugging environments;
  • good written and spoken English;
  • ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred requirements

The following qualifications will be considered a plus:

  • experience with Eclipse plugin development, GEF, JavaFX or ECore models;
  • experience with model-based design environments and languages such as Scade, SDL, SysML or Stateflow;
  • contributions to open-source software projects;
  • knowledge of one or more of the following areas: software engineering, satisfiability and constraint solving, model checking and formal verification techniques, first-order logic and SMT solvers, formal analysis of hybrid systems, runtime verification and diagnosis, or formal safety assessment.
