Java Software Developer in Optical Network - SaFEWaRe Unit, Cyber Security Centre

Fondazione Bruno Kessler is a leading research institution based in Trento, Italy, with twelve research centres. The SaFEWaRe unit of the Cyber Security Centre is seeking a skilled Java developer to contribute to the development of new features for an SDN controller used in the management of optical transport networks, in collaboration with Italian and international partners including Cisco Photonics.

What to expect

You will join the SaFEWaRe unit, which operates across two tracks: research in secure code development and industrial collaborations focused on software implementation, with a long-term partnership with Cisco Photonics for the development of fiber-based transport network management solutions. The contract is fixed-term for 18 months, with possibility of extension depending on funding, starting preferably in October 2026, full-time (38 hours per week). The gross annual salary ranges from approximately 41,200 to 47,100 euros depending on background and expertise, plus an objectives achievement bonus. Position

The selected candidate will contribute to the design, development and testing of software components for an SDN controller, a back-end Java application integrating multiple functional modules for the management of optical transport networks. Responsibilities include analysing requirements and providing design solutions, estimating code completion, implementing solutions with the required quality and testing standards, performing reverse-engineering activities on existing code, and supporting solution integration, system testing and deployment.

Requirements

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent;
  • experience in Java development;
  • knowledge of Object-Oriented programming principles;
  • knowledge of at least one IDE (IntelliJ, Eclipse);
  • ability to write robust and well-documented code and to design medium-complexity software components;
  • good knowledge of English, oral and written (B2 or above);
  • intermediate knowledge of Italian, oral and written (B1 or above).

Preferred requirements

The following will be considered a plus:

  • at least 3 years of post-master experience;
  • knowledge of Agile methodology;
  • knowledge of a version control system, preferably Git;
  • knowledge of additional programming languages such as Python or C/C++ and scripting languages such as Bash.
