Fondazione Bruno Kessler, through its Italian-German Historical Institute (ISIG), is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the TRAVEL project (Travellers' interactions in early modern Italy), funded by the Fondo Italiano per la Scienza, focusing on interpersonal encounters involving travellers in Trento and Gorizia between 1400 and 1600.
What to expect
You will join a collaborative research team led by PI Sandra Toffolo, working on different aspects of mobility and encounter in early modern Italy. The project brings together historians examining legislation, urban space, communication and material culture, with regular team meetings, scientific events and collaborative publications. The contract is fixed-term from December 2026 to 31 July 2029, full-time (38 hours per week), with a gross annual salary of 47,182.01 euros, corresponding to a Third Level Researcher under the CCPL Research Foundation Personnel. The selected candidate will conduct research on interpersonal encounters involving travellers in Trento and Gorizia, publish in international peer-reviewed outlets and present findings at international conferences. The role includes participation in regular team meetings and collective activities such as conference co-organisation, co-editing of volumes and seminars, active contribution to the intellectual life of ISIG, participation in public engagement activities, and collaboration with a Digital Humanities researcher working on digital maps of urban spaces of encounter.
Requirements
The ideal candidate should have:
- PhD in early modern history;
- professional and thorough knowledge of early modern history;
- research experience related to the history of mobility;
- experience working with early printed and archival sources;
- knowledge of English and Italian at B2 or above (CEFR);
- good knowledge of Latin and of other languages relevant to the position.
Preferred requirements
Furthermore, the following elements will be positively evaluated:
- international research experience;
- experience working in a collaborative research project;
- experience conducting research in archives and libraries relevant to the project.
