Living and working in Alta Valsugana

Between Pergine, the lakes and the mountains, just a few kilometres from Trento

Pergine: a small town close to Trento

Pergine Valsugana is the third-largest municipality in Trentino by population, with more than 21,000 residents. It has schools, shops, services and a railway station, with enough of an urban feel to make it a practical alternative for anyone who wants to stay close to Trento without living in the provincial capital.

Being close to Trento does not mean that Pergine is simply a residential area. It has its own business community, with companies of different sizes and across different sectors. Trentino Sviluppo’s BIC, only a few hundred metres from the railway station, covers more than 23,000 square metres and hosts start-ups, SMEs and industrial companies. Since 2024, it has also been home to the Life Sciences Hub, with laboratories and spaces for companies working in biotechnology.

That is one of the less obvious things about Alta Valsugana: you may choose to live here because Trento is close, but that does not necessarily mean travelling into the city every day for work.

From town to mountains in just a few kilometres

From Pergine, the landscape changes quickly. There are the lakes of Caldonazzo and Levico, then the road climbs towards the plateaus and places such as Baselga di Piné, where the setting is unmistakably mountainous. Living in the mountains here, however, does not necessarily mean moving away from everyday services or organising your entire life around a car and long journeys. The main communities have schools, services for families, shops and what you need for day-to-day life, while Trento remains relatively close.

That may be the area’s most distinctive feature: you can decide how much mountain you want. You can live in Pergine, with the scale of a small town and a train connection to Trento, or move higher towards villages, forests and plateaus while keeping the provincial capital within manageable reach.

One valley, one language. Just a few kilometres from Pergine lies the Mòcheni Valley, or Bersntol in the Mòcheno language, home to one of Trentino’s three historic linguistic minorities. Mòcheno is a language of Germanic origin that is still spoken in the municipalities of Fierozzo, Frassilongo and Palù del Fersina. Its presence says something about Trentino beyond this individual valley: the province is not culturally uniform, and protecting its linguistic minorities is one of the tangible expressions of its special autonomy.

This is not mountain territory designed only for holidays. It is lived in throughout the year. Alta Valsugana sits precisely in between: close enough to the city not to feel cut off, but far enough into the mountains to experience a different side of Trentino.
