Working and raising a family

FAMILY AND WORK

Support and services for parents living and working in Trentino.

If you are considering moving to Italy with a family, the job itself is only part of the decision.

You also need to understand what happens around work. What childcare is available? What happens when you take parental leave? Are there local forms of support in addition to the Italian national system?

In Trentino, national family and employment provisions are complemented by specific provincial measures designed to help people combine work and caring responsibilities. They do not apply automatically to everyone, and eligibility varies according to the measure. But if you are thinking about building both a career and a family here, they are worth knowing about.

Service Vouchers for childcare and family care

One of Trentino’s main work-life balance measures is the Service Voucher scheme. Service Vouchers help eligible families cover part of the cost of educational, childcare and care services while parents are working or taking part in training or reskilling aimed at finding employment.

The current programme runs from 2025 to 2027 and covers children up to the age of 14, or under 18 in specific circumstances including disability or particular hardship. Access depends on several requirements, including the household’s ICEF economic indicator, and families still contribute part of the cost themselves. Depending on the child’s age and the conditions of the scheme, eligible services can include early-childhood care and other educational or childcare activities.

The practical question it helps address is a simple one: who looks after your children while you work, train or prepare for your next job?

Additional support when fathers take parental leave

Trentino also has a specific measure designed to encourage fathers to take a more active role in childcare.

Under Intervention 2.2.2 of the Employment Agency, eligible fathers taking parental leave instead of the working mother can receive €400 gross for every 14 consecutive days of parental leave. Specific conditions apply, including requirements concerning residence or place of employment and the level of income received during the period of leave. Applications must be submitted within 60 days after the relevant period of parental leave ends.

For someone coming from outside Italy, the useful thing to understand is that this sits on top of the national parental leave framework. Trentino’s autonomy allows the Province to introduce additional measures in certain areas rather than relying only on national provisions.

Additional maternity and parental leave support for private-sector employees

From 2026, another provincial measure is available to eligible private-sector employees taking maternity or parental leave during the period from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2027. For maternity leave, the supplementary allowance can provide up to €350 per month for a maximum of five months. For parental leave, the provincial supplement can provide up to €175 for every 14 consecutive days of leave, for a maximum period of one month, subject to the conditions set out in the scheme.

Again, this is not a universal payment for every parent living in Trentino. Eligibility depends on employment, residence or place of work and the conditions attached to the national leave allowance. But it is another example of how provincial measures can complement the Italian welfare system.

What about housing?

For families considering an international move, childcare is only one part of the equation. Finding somewhere to live matters just as much. Trentino has experimented with several housing measures in recent years, including support for first-home purchases and programmes aimed at keeping smaller mountain communities inhabited.

Some of the schemes that attracted the most attention, including the grant of up to €100,000 for renovating and purchasing properties in municipalities at risk of depopulation, are no longer open to new applications. Rather than presenting an expired grant as a current opportunity, we keep our housing information updated here: Living in Trentino’s mountains: housing, connectivity and life beyond the city.External link

A new measure for families with a third child

Since 2026, Trentino has also introduced a provincial allowance for households in which a third child is born or adopted. This is another measure where the details matter.

It is not automatically available to anyone who has recently moved to Trentino: eligibility includes specific requirements concerning residence, family circumstances and employment or social-security contributions. For example, the mother must generally be resident in the province and have accumulated at least two years of continuous registered residence in Trentino during the previous ten years.

That distinction is particularly important for international newcomers. The existence of a provincial measure does not necessarily mean you will qualify immediately after moving.

Support helps. It does not make family life effortless.

No childcare voucher or parental leave payment can guarantee an easy balance between work and family. Your employer matters. Your working hours matter. Where you live matters. So do your children’s ages and your own circumstances.

What these measures show is that, in Trentino, work-life balance is also treated as a public-policy issue, with provincial tools operating alongside the national Italian system. For someone comparing different places to live and work, that is useful information to have before making a decision.
