FBK is looking for a Researcher in Responsible and Trustworthy NLP, to join its Machine Translation Unit within the Digital Industry Center in Trentino. In this role, you will help design and evaluate multilingual and multimodal (text and speech) AI systems that are reliable, fair, and safe.

In this role, you will work on the core challenges of responsible NLP. Your daily activity will focus on creating and evaluating multilingual and multimodal datasets, running large-scale assessments, and understanding how models behave across different languages, tasks, and contexts. You will explore new methods to improve fairness, trustworthiness, and safety in large language models, applying human-centered approaches to translation and multilingual AI. You’ll collaborate closely with colleagues from different backgrounds, contributing to shared research goals and helping bring clarity to how complex systems make decisions. Publications, presentations, and scientific dissemination will be part of your work, with the chance to grow your research profile inside an international environment.
Requirements
To be considered for this position, you should have:
- a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or a related field;
- experience or publications in NLP or similar research domains;
- strong programming skills (e.g., Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow);
- familiarity with large language models and evaluation techniques;
- interest in responsible AI, safety, and fairness;
- excellent proficiency in English;
- good communication skills and a collaborative, proactive attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
These elements are not mandatory but will be considered an asset:
- a PhD in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or a closely related field;
- experience in interdisciplinary or international research collaborations;
- ability to develop a research agenda, contribute to proposals, and mentor junior researchers;
- experience with multilingual or multimodal translation systems;
- a strong publication record in NLP, machine translation, speech translation, AI fairness, or related areas.
