Highlights
If you're looking for a role where cryptography meets real-world impact, this is for you.
You’ll be part of FBK’s Center for Cybersecurity, working on cutting-edge research in post-quantum cryptography and helping shape the digital security of tomorrow. This is a fixed-term position (until December 31, 2026) funded under Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). You’ll join an international team based in Trento, Northern Italy, and benefit from a people-first work culture that includes flexible hours, training support, meal vouchers, health fund, and more.
Position
FBK is looking for a postdoctoral researcher in applied cryptography, contributing to the design and development of secure, post-quantum cryptographic tools.
The selected candidate will work within the ALEPH research unit of FBK’s Center for Cybersecurity, focusing on:
- Developing and assessing post-quantum cryptographic algorithms and protocols for privacy-preserving federated learning, AI, identity management, and access control;
- Contributing to software development for applied cryptography in cloud services (libraries, automated tools for compliance and security testing);
- Coordinating and implementing project activities, ensuring timely and high-quality outcomes;
- Supporting dissemination and knowledge transfer activities, including workshops, publications, and collaboration with industrial partners.
The position is part of the IPCEI Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (CIS) program and FBK’s CAITE project, which aims to develop secure, privacy-aware, and AI-enabled cloud-edge systems.
Requirements
These are explicitly required in the job description and will be used for candidate selection:
- PhD in Mathematics or Computer Science with strong cryptographic background, or a closely related area
- Solid background and publications in post-quantum cryptography (especially code-based, preferably, or lattice-based), including:
- Mathematical foundations
- Hardness assumptions and parameter choice
- Cryptanalysis
- Application to cloud service scenarios (e.g., identity, access control, e-voting)
- Experience in software development for applied cryptography (ideally in Python, Rust, Go, or C/C++)
- Excellent English proficiency (CEFR level C1 or higher) verified through technical/scientific interview
Preferred Qualifications
These are additional strengths that enhance candidacy but are not strictly required:
- Experience in international and collaborative research projects (academic, public, or private sector)
- Experience with federated learning, cryptographic tools for identity/access management
- Familiarity with compliance, security testing, deployment tools
- Project coordination or dissemination experience (e.g., organising workshops, writing guidelines)
- Communication and relational skills
- Teamwork mindset
